THE DIVINERS, a Powerful and Unforgettable Drama, at Ashland HS Theatre Nov 1-12.

Ashland High School Theatre opens its 2017 season with a haunting, moving story about faith and friendship. The Diviners by Jim Leonard Jr. tells the story of a small farming community in a fictional Zion, Indiana during the Great Depression – a time when water and faith were in short supply. With echoes of Steinbeck’s classic depression-era work, The Diviners is an earthy, funny, and profoundly tragic play that speaks to a need for community during a very dark time in our nation’s history. A bit of romance, comedy and tragedy weave gracefully through this powerful piece.  A Winner of the American College Theatre Festival Award, The Diviners was first professionally produced at the Circle Repertory Theatre in NY in 1980.

“This play is a beautiful exploration of the value of faith, friendship and community at a time when hope was fading fast,” said Betsy Bishop, director of The Diviners. “Our present days challenge us to not lose faith or hope, but cherish the gifts that are right before us.”

A charismatic but back-sliding preacher, CC Showers, drifts into town and meets Buddy, a gentle but emotionally disturbed boy who is frightened of water, yet happens to have the gift of divining water. The two outcasts find a common bond and help each other divine for truth, faith and hope. Their faith is tested. The townspeople demand that the preacher return to a way of life he no longer believes in and it drives both CC and Buddy to a crisis of trust. The Diviners present some enlightening questions.

Featured cast members are: Nur Shelton (CC Showers); Kate Jaques Prentice (Jennie Mae); Nicky Clary (Buddy); Kyle Storie (Ferris); Audrey Cirzan (Norma); Sierra Milburn (Luella;) Jack Kleen (Basil); Avram Rosewood (Melvin); Owen Lucas (Dewey);  Zoe Lishinsky, Julia Tobrock & Ella Stringer (Elegists); Taiga Sherman (Darlene); Allie Poole (Goldie).
