The Demon Barber of Fleet Street school edition by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler

March 1-12, 2017

Ashland High School Mountain Avenue Theatre proudly presents SWEENEY TODD

for just nine performances from March 1 through March 12.  Directed by Jeremy Johnson, actor at OSF and director of Cabaret and How to Succeed at AHS, Sweeney Todd involves over 65 AHS students.

Based on a play by Christopher Bond, and adapted for the stage by Hugh Wheeler, Sweeney Todd debuted on Broadway in 1979. One of Sondheim’s greatest and most ambitious scores, the show won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and has since gone down as a musical theatre and cultural touchstone. It was later adapted for the big screen by Tim Burton, with Johnny Depp in the lead role.

This famed musical thriller is a tasty, theatrical treat that simultaneously shocked, awed and delighted audiences across the world. An infamous tale, Sweeney Todd is an unjustly exiled barber who returns to London seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd’s thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up, and the carnage has only just begun.

Ashland High School Theatre is taking a fresh look at this Sondheim masterpiece. Director Jeremy Johnson moves the extravagant storytelling from 19th century London to a world where some time in the future, one man’s quest for revenge envelops the lives of all around him. Masterfully adapted for high school performers, this production contains mature content.

Featured players are Jonathan Connolly (Sweeney Todd); Sierra Milburn (Mrs. Lovett); Nur Shelton (Anthony); Brook Hall (Johanna); Dylan Kistler (Judge Turpin); Kyle Storie (Beadle); Audrey Cirzan (Beggar); Isaiah Brown (Tobias); Grace Pruitt (Pirelli) and Tessa Buckley (Madame Fogg). The 22 cast members in the ensemble are powerful in this dystopian world.

Assisting director Johnson on the creative team will be Karl Iverson as musical director and Travis Moddison as musical conductor. Jaclyn Miller is the choreographer. Ariel Greninger is costume designer; Natalie Scott is the set designer. Jesse Purkerson is the technical director with Andy Palstring as the master carpenter.  Bart Grady is the lighting designer. Liisa Ivary is the dialect coach, Laura Derocher is a vocal coach and Virginia Hudson is the wig designer. Stage Manager Nellie Strong is assisted by Lila Goldman and Elijah Cobb as her ASMs. 20 students in the tech class will run the show backstage.
